The Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s in-house record label tsoLIVE releases Gustav Holst: The Planets, the orchestra’s fifth in a series of self-produced recordings. The Planets was recorded live at Roy Thomson Hall, Toronto, Canada, in December 2008 and features TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Women of the Elmer Iseler Singers and the Amadeus Choir.
The Planets, inspired by Gustav Holst’s curiosity with astrology, was first performed in 1918 and is considered the composer’s most popular work. In 2008, The Toronto Star praised the TSO’s performance of The Planets writing, "The dynamics go from roof-blowing to the merest whispers of sound. There is plenty of texture or melody, and the conductor can show off his orchestra's versatility. Oundjian succeeded on all counts in a well-paced interpretation."
