“CONCERT OF 100 CANDLES” Featuring the World Premiere of Peter Togni’s Lamentations of Jeremiah

Friday, April 27, 2007 at Church of St. Mary Magdalene - Toronto (8:00PM)

For Immediate Release: Toronto, April 10, 2007: The Elmer Iseler Singers and conductor Lydia Adams present the final concert of their 28th Toronto concert series on Friday, April 27 at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene. The program features the World Premiere of Peter Togni’s “Lamentations of Jeremiah” (a Canada Council commission) and the brilliance and virtuoso playing of bass clarinetist Jeff Reilly. This evening of contemplative music, which also features the radiant voices of the Elmer Iseler Singers singing the exquisite “Lamentations of Jeremiah” by Thomas Tallis, is presented in the warm, glowing atmosphere provided by a hundred candles.

The Lamentations are found in the Book of Lamentations in the Bible, immediately following the Book of Jeremiah. They are part of the liturgy of the Holy Week, and exemplify the important component of lament, atonement and repentance of the Paschal festivities. In the Catholic liturgy, this text provided a source of inspirations for many composers and many masterpieces

Juno award nominee Peter Togni is a composer, broadcaster, organist and conductor. He now lives in Halifax, NS where he is host of the CBC radio Two's national program "Weekender", and director of the Togni consort. "Togni's music is deeply felt, simply put, well-crafted and irradiated by a personal sense of the divine", commented The Chronicle Herald (Halifax). The last few years have seen clarinetist Jeff Reilly emerge as a distinct and powerful voice in the field of improvised contemporary music. Reilly is also a composer and a music producer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

The Elmer Iseler Singers are pleased to dedicate the final concert of their 2006/07 season to the Canada Council for the Arts in celebration of its 50th anniversary. The Canada Council, Canada’s national arts funding agency, was created by Parliament on March 28, 1957. Concert of 100 Candles is one of more than 120 arts events across the country which will be dedicated to the Canada Council this year, and we would like to thank the Canada Council for its ongoing support of the Elmer Iseler Singers’ activities. This concert will be recorded for future broadcast on 94.1 FM CBC Radio Two, Choral Concert - Howard Dyck – host, Robert Cooper – executive producer.
