For Immediate Release – Toronto, September 24, 2010: Conductor Lydia Adams and Toronto’s renowned Elmer Iseler Singers kick off their 2010/2011 32nd Toronto Season,

SPIRIT TO SING with a diverse and expressive spectrum of the a cappella choral sound and a grand celebration of the 90th birthday of author Mary Willan Mason.

The concert – Sunday October 24th 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Toronto includes inspiring works by Canadian composers including the exquisite Eulogies by John Estacio, the graceful and flowing Requiem by Eleanor Daley, the masterful Missa Brevis by Ruth Watson Henderson and the timeless Missa Brevis IX Sancti Johannis Baptistae by Healey Willan.

This evening promises to be exciting as Lydia Adams, an ambassador of the Canadian Music Centre and the Elmer Iseler Singers celebrate a choral birthday for Mary Willan Mason, who exclaimed when she heard the news of this special celebration: “I’ve never had a birthday party that was an actual choral concert!” Mary graduated from University College in the University of Toronto in 1943. She was art, music, and drama critic on the Hamilton Spectator, long-time executive director of the Ontario Choral Federation, and a contributing editor of Antique Showcase Magazine. She is a member of ACTRA and has worked in television and movies. Mary  Willan recently authored the Well-Tempered Listener: Growing Up with Musical Parents, a memoir of her father, distinguished composer Healey Willan and his musician-wife pianist Gladys (‘Nell’) Hall,  published by John Parry’s Words Indeed Publishing Inc.  This witty and entertaining book will be available for purchase in the lobby.

The Elmer Iseler Singers, conducted by Artistic Director Lydia Adams, is a twenty-voice professional chamber choir based in Toronto. Founded by the late Dr. Elmer Iseler in 1979, the Elmer Iseler Singers are one of Canada’s most illustrious professional choral ensembles. Reviewers have remarked on the Elmer Iseler Singers’ “flawless intonation, rhythmic vitality and great sensitivity to the expressive power of phrasing.”
