For Immediate Release:

Canadian Conductor, Composer and Arranger Lydia Adams Wins

Prestigious 2013 Ontario Premier's Award for Excellence in the Arts

June 27, 2013 The Boards of Directors of two of Canada’s top choirs, the Elmer Iseler Singers and the Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto are thrilled to announce that Artistic Director and Conductor Lydia Adams has won the 2013 Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. Dr. Adams was one of six finalists for this prestigious award, which recognizes Ontario artists who have made outstanding contributions to arts and culture. Deemed “the leading exponent of the Canadian choral composer” by the Canadian Music Centre, Dr. Adams is the 2012 winner of the Roy Thomson Hall Award of Recognition given by the Toronto Arts Council Foundation, a 2009 winner of the Ontario Premier’s Finalist Award for Excellence in the Arts, and a 2003 Honourary Doctorate recipient from Mount Allison University for her outstanding contributions to choral music in Canada and internationally. “As the conductor of the Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto for 30 years and of Canada’s Elmer Iseler Singers for 15 years, Lydia Adams has consistently promoted and programmed music by both time-honored and contemporary Canadian composers, while at the same time promoting young Canadian artists, many of whom have gone on to establish a career in singing and/or composing. Some of the finest performances of my music have come from Dr. Adams’ choirs.” -Ruth Watson Henderson, celebrated Canadian composer. Lydia Adams named Joel Tranquilla as the winner of the 2013 Emerging Artist Award. Joel currently serves as Artistic Director of the Windsor Classic Chorale and Chorus Master of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra. Join us in congratulating Dr. Adams in this recognition of her mentorship, dedication, and artistic excellence. We also extend our congratulations and best wishes to Joel Tranquilla for a long, prosperous and meaningful career. -30-
